Over one hundred museums are under construction every year in China. In fact, a new museum project breaks ground every three days. The mountain of capital behind this much construction seems like a blessing for China"s cultural industry, yet the numbers alone hardly tell the whole story. On this International Museum Day, we would like to tell you more about the development path for China"s museums.

The number of non-movable cultural relics in China is now over 900,000... and movable objects total 20-million... and that doesn"t even include relics held in private collections. China now has close to thirty million museums, one for every 600,000 people. In the drive to strengthen museum construction, cities across China have unanimously set their targets toward expanding the number. However, it"s a path that has raised concerns for many museum curators.

Wang Yi, Curator of Chengdu Museum, said, "Building a museum capital is the right thing to do. But I am concerned whether we are ready for this massive building. Are we ready in terms of money, land, security, and relevant policies? If not, the day a museum opens is the probably the day it closes."

Chinese museums have been open free of charge to the public since 2008. Visitors poured into museums at the early days of the regulation, yet very few of them continue to visit now. An emphasis on quantity over quality, coupled with a lack of concern for visitors" requirements, has exacerbated the situation for many museums.

To cope with the current situation, the Museum of Sichuan is launching a caravan project, to transport its collections to the countryside, to people who do not often visit museums.

Private museums are struggling as well. China"s largest cluster of private museums is located in Anren district of Chengdu. Named after its owner and curator Fan Jianchuan, the Jianchuan Museum is one of the thirty museums that can barely make ends meet. The museum opened in 2006 with an investment of one billion yuan. The deficit in the first two years reached 23 million yuan, and there was no return on that investment until last year.

Private collector Ren Jingwen opened his Museum of Cattle Culture last September, and is already carrying a debt of 13 million yuan.

Ren Jingwen, Curator of Museum of Cattle Culture, said, "The operational cost every month is around 150,000 yuan, and the proceeds are less than 20,000 yuan. With 130,000 yuan in deficit, the museum can barely survive two years."

To make ends meet, the Museum of Cattle Culture is renting a side wing to a bathing center in order to pay museum staff.

And a private museum built on top of a national protected cultural site is turning into a restaurant... a threat for the ancient architecture beneath. Some private museums have even sold part of their collection in order to scrape out a living.

Private museums in China have only been around for five years. Many policies are still in the pilot phase and their success will materialize only after wading thorough government bureaucracy at all levels. So as cities wait for the necessary ingredients to come together, talking about building a museum capital could actually be just a lot of hot air.
