1971年列侬和妻子大野洋子（Yoko Ono）住在英国乡下一幢豪华的别墅里。年初的某一天的早，列侬起床后在洋子的陪伴下，写下了《想像》的歌词。其音乐部分则是在他家那架著名的白色钢琴上写成的。
后来在一次飞行途中，列侬又做了几处修改，在一张纽约希尔顿旅馆的便笺上写下了最后完整的歌词。歌词中没有"爱"或者"自由"这样的字眼，列侬也从没有想到要写一首圣歌（Anthem），但这首歌后来却成了一代人的圣歌。同年6月的某一天，列侬和鼓手Alan White（后Yes乐队的鼓手）和贝司手，德国朋友Klaus Voormann在自家的一间简陋的录音棚内录制了这首歌，列侬亲自弹的钢琴（一架Steinway）。
