Experts have long been perplexed by questions about the many artifacts that went missing from the Old Summer Palace in Beijing which are now overseas and have been only been seen in pictures.
In the ruins of the Old Summer Palace, an operation named "The Search for Old Summer Palace Relics Lost Overseas" was launched on Sunday. Historians and experts on cultural relics protection are set to travel abroad, in the hope of confirming the number and the status of these relics overseas. They plan to obtain a visual record of the artifacts. They also hope the initiative will help gain public attention.
Starting in 1860, the cultural treasures of the Old Summer Palace, an imperial garden in northwest of Beijing, were looted with most of the items thought to have gone to Britain, France and other European countries.
